Certification and Standard Service
Background
BFDA provides product certification services to support farmers, industries, and commerce in Bhutan for market access and trade facilitation. BFDA implements product certification in conformity with ISO/IEC 17065:2012 to provide a third-party mark of certification. The three certification schemes currently implemented under the Certification Section are: Food Product Certification, BhutanGAP Certification, and Bhutan Organic Certification.
Certification of food and agricultural commodities is an essential aspect of the national food control system, offering assurance that products meet defined safety, quality, and hygiene standards. It functions as a formal recognition that producers and processors are adhering to established protocols such as Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and other relevant standards or requirements. By verifying compliance through audits, inspections, and documentation, certification helps minimize food safety risks and supports informed regulatory oversight across the entire supply chain.
Furthermore, certification plays a key role in facilitating trade and building consumer trust. It aligns domestic production systems with international standards, reducing technical barriers and enabling easier access to global markets.
